  1. Fantastic idea, Marie! Why not blame Fate? She has got to be the only one NOT mentioned in the lesson we had last term in which students blamed pretty much everybody!

A good way to approach it would be to research how the Elizabethan people viewed Fate and Fortune. Look into the Roman and/or Greek Goddesses of fortune and find out just how fickle they were supposed to be. How superstitious were the Elizabethan audiences?

Romeo and Juliet are "star-cross'd lovers," is this their curse or blessing? Has Fate played a cruel trick on these poor kids? Remember, Romeo screams to the heavens, "I am Fortune's fool!" moments after he kills Tybalt. There are many other references to Fortune and how they pray to her to be kind...

However, Fortune is not always kind.

Juliet actually WANTS Fortune to be fickle, thinking that, since so much bloodshed and violence has scarred her family recently, Fortune MUST be frowning on them. She wants Fortune to change her mind and cut her and Romeo a break!

Fortune is a fickle mistress in this play and works AGAINST the lovers more than for them (she may never have been on their side in the first place!)

Romeo ends up despising Fortune and Fate by the end, screaming "I defy you, stars!" He knows he and Juliet have been abandoned by Fate -- or were cursed to begin with -- and he decides to take action in to his own hands. That is, if their suicide hadn't ALREADY been written in the stars!

Anyway, I'll stop now because I feel I'm starting write my OWN essay on it. Feel free to approach however you wish, but definitely look into the symbolism of Fate and Fortune to a 16th century person.

    Happy writing!

  2. Yer Alex i am agreeing with you haha
Well, Mr Goodwin instead of talking about fortune and the 16th century blah blah can i just focus on FATE ITSELF and just relate to the text that you gave us without using any external resources????like the net.I will back it up with quotes and stuff but i really don't like your idea im sorry i just want to keep it simple and effective. PLEASE!!!!!!!

  3. You don't have to use external resources. The exposition is based on the text itself and that will suffice.

Fate is a girl because females are fickle. There, I said it. It's out there. You females can't make your minds up about anything. You know it's true.

Marie, there's enough about Fate and Fortune in the play to keep you covered without resorting to external sources.

    Fickle women!

  4. back to the first thing. I didnt blame it on all the characters. Just one:

    JULIET.

    Anyway

But i disagree with how women cant make up their minds. Because I, and many other women i know, are very stuborn and often make the males change their minds :p.

Sorry had to say. Females are persuasive when they want to be so dont need to change their minds :)

  5. Being stuborn is possibly worse than being fickle...

  11. ok, well alex, i rekon fortune is a girl because males do not have the brains to think up the things that fortune and fate does, so haha boys!!! and being fickle is good! it works in our favour (sometimes)!!

  12. No marie i didn't mention all of what goodwin did suggest but i did throw in something that wasn't mentioned. And yes josh it was really necessary it got a bite from you didn't it :P
