The time has come! The deadline is creeping forward. There are two ways you can look at this:
1) OH GOD!!!
and
2) Phew! Last folio ever!
I'll share with you something that I got out of these last ten weeks...
You all went at this task with a limited idea of the theme. You immediately thought of cultural differences, racial and religious, not to mention the 'overcoming boundaries' angle. What slowly emerged from you was the letting go of these obvious choices and aiming for more subtle angles, especially with the artwork. You analysed how social and individual opinions on what constitutes art may have changed over the years.
Here's my question: do you think our personal beliefs and opinions are influenced by the world around us, or is the world shaped by our personal beliefs? In other words, are we the sheep or the shepherds?
Think this one through and explain your thoughts clearly.
Go for it...
The world only exists as we each induvidually see it. but we form our personal ideas from what we experience. So, no one can live without others (else, our opinions would be pointless) but by co-existing with other people, we must form our ideas and accept those of others. Most of society seem to be sheep, but only in behaviour-not in beliefs.

At times we're all sheep, its a simple fact of life,we may not like it but we deal with it, take school for instance, we dont have a choice in wat we do in class, its either write and listen or get out. when we get home, were told to do our homework, clean our room and wash the dishes, we have no choice in this stuff, but its what we do when the shepard isnt around, or so it would seem its not around, if the shepard is still around then we know we are the sheep, only when u have that true sence of freedom do we no we are the shepard.

I feel that we are sheep. There was once a time when people were the shepards. but thanks in the end our ancestors sort of world for us. Maybe one day we will reclaim the role of shepards, but right now, we are sort of on a set course, and desperately need to break off.

ReplyDeleteLike jeff, i belive that sometimes we can be the shepards and other times we can be the sheep. eg. if we are the sheep, say, when we are in our group of friends, then there is no true shephard, no true leader, as everyone decieeds what the want to do, but, to a certain extent we also base it on other people's beliefs.
But on the other hand, we could all also be seen as the shepards, going our own ways, and trying to lead everyone else (maybe a little too much at times).
I think our world is definately shaped because of the way we live in it, veiw it and treat it. Take global warming as an example.

ReplyDeleteThat question has a parody for an answer. Of course our opinions are shaped by the world around us. From the moment we are born we become part of our parents world, growing up under their influence. From them we learn how to act, what to say and do and when to simply stay quiet. This is different for everyone.
But I also agree with Bree- our world is also shaped by our own beliefs. What we believe about the world is how we form opinions and ideas, as well as how we grow into the people we will become. Our own experiences will influence our world, a thousand times diference from, for example, those living in thirld world conditions in a country controlled by war.
We live in a two-way world. We give and we take whether its experience, opinion or idea.
So here's another question for you: Do we shape our own worlds on ideals or reality? And does this affect how we view other people?

ReplyDeleteI think we shape our world on a little of both ideals and reality. because we can't all go around all the time thinking the world is perfect- that no-one is starving or there isn't war on a lot of people's doorsteps, but when you are a little kid, you definately like to think that.
When we are little, our world is shaped on ideals, and, as we get older, it becomes more shaped around reality. as we learn about war, poverty, famine, the past of what things were like, and even learning about the economy can have a definate part in helping people form opinions. When we get a job, i think our lives are mainly based on reality, and definaltely now i have started to forget how to be a kid with all the stress of school work and just life in general.
and (you can't tell me you didn't think someone would bring retreat into this) retreat taught me that lesson again, that sometimes we just need to forget and have fun, and i have definately come back feeling relaxed.

I'll get to the point. I believe that our lives are created by our personal oppinions and beliefs, but that our beliefs and oppinions have been influenced by others.

With that beeing said i do not however believe that fate or destiny co-exist with our world. Nobodies future is writen [if they have been iwant a copy of the script], the past is the only thing carved in stone.
I don't believe that we are restiricted by our world [besides the obvious physical limitations], but rather we place the restrictions on the world we live in.
Great question from Giverny! Do we shape our worlds on reality or our ideals? I think we shape our world on our ideals. The only problem is:

Bec mentioned that, as we get older and learn more about the world around us, we base our lives in reality. I agree. Reality will always influence our decisions in life, regardless of our desire to achieve our ideals.
Sure, the stress of working and school is terrible, but are we enduring all this in order to achieve our ideals?
And what happens if we can never achieve our ideals? What then?
Regardless of that, yes, I believe we live for our ideals. This sets goals for us, gives us purpose, even if our ideals prove to be our Holy Grails!

Ofcourse our personal beliefs and opinions are influenced by the world around us. Whether it be our peers and family or even little things like gossip.
Yes i do feel we are all sheep, some are shepherds, but they are rarely around. We shouldn't be sheep though, or shepherds. I feel we should be cows, pigs, chickens..etc
In other words just be ourselves and try to not let things in the world influence us so much.

okay, so... wow. I completely and utterly agree with what Giv said, including the question she brought up.
But considering the circumstances as to how we're born and raised, some of us develop our own opinions AGAINST what our parents believe, because maybe we don't want to become the exact same person as what they are, we want to be an individual.
But while doing so, we're generally retrieving ideas from our friends, peers and teachers at school as well, and that develops and entwines itself into what we want to believe. So in general - at this age now, we are generally sheep, not so much the shepards.
If we were the shepds, we would be in complete control of our own lives, making our own decisions, choices and opinions and basing generally on the things that happen to us everyday.
so in conclusion;
your better to be a sheep, and learn and grow as a person - discover yourself before you form yourself, because you can't form who you want to be without knowing who you are first.

ReplyDeleteI believe that the shepherd-sheep power structure is completely relative.
How many of us become completely different people depending on who we're with? Just look at retreat - most of us we separated from the people we usual associate with and behold: we got along! Sometimes we need to take that step back to see who our shepherds are and whether that's for the best or if we need to do something to change it!
